The easiest way to identify your hinge or roller is the stamped model number on the barrel itself, usually visible once you clear the grease buildup with a rag. If the stamp’s worn off, measure the pin diameter with a caliper and note whether the gate is welded-hung or bolt-through.

The aftermarket route saves roughly $30-$50 per hinge on parts, but we only use equivalents that have the same bushing material and pin hardness. For Elite’s older CSW series, there’s a compatibility gotcha: the pin spacing on pre-2012 hinges is 1/8 inch narrower than current production, so a current OEM hinge won’t drop in without reaming the mounting holes. • The gate grinds or chatters during travel. This usually means the roller bearing has lost its grease seal and the races are dry. On Elite slide gates, we see this most often on the upper guide roller, which takes the lateral load when the gate starts from a stop.
• One side of the gate sits lower than the other. A worn barrel hinge pin has ovalized the bushing, letting the gate drop on the failed side. In San Mateo’s coastal humidity, we’ve seen this accelerate when the original installer skipped the zinc-rich primer on the pin.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check the hinge pin for play by lifting the gate slightly at the free corner, feeling for clunk, and photographing any stamp numbers you find. What you shouldn’t do is remove a loaded hinge or roller while the gate is hanging. Elite’s heavier gates, especially with a CSW200 or CSW24 arm attached, carry significant torsion through the hinge line. A pin pulled without supporting the gate properly can drop the leaf, damage the operator arm, or worse.

We also see DIY attempts go wrong on the alignment side. A new hinge installed even 1/8 inch out of plumb will preload the operator and cause premature wear on the gearbox.
